Frequently asked questions

About Wartner Cryotherapy

How does Wartner Cryotherapy work?
Wartner Cryotherapy works in a similar way to the liquid nitrogen freezing method used by GPs. The freezing agent is applied to the foam applicator; you then freeze the wart or verruca by applying the saturated foam applicator for a few seconds. As a result of this freezing, the growth should fall off after about 10-14 days. Wartner Cryotherapy is not harmful to the environment.
What components make up the Wartner Cryotherapy treatment?

Wartner Cryotherapy Wart Remover contains an aerosol can with a mixture of dimethyl ether and propane, an applicator holder and foam applicators; it contains a file to remove calloused skin on top of the verruca prior to the treatment.

Will using Wartner Cryotherapy hurt?
Freezing the skin may lead to a slight aching, stinging sensation that may cause some discomfort. This will pass quickly, leaving a small blister under the treated area.
Is Wartner Cryotherapy safe to use?
Yes, Wartner Cryotherapy is safe to use if you follow the instructions carefully; however we do not advise use on children under the age of four. CE Marked and classified as a Class II A Medical Device, which conforms to European guidelines (Council Directive 93/42/EEC) Wartner Cryotherapy has been assessed by several scientific and medical experts as being a safe method for the removal of warts and verrucas: “Wartner Cryotherapy meets all lawful requirements which serve to guarantee consumer safety”. Mr J Sleumer – Laboratory Manager Eurofill – Zaandam, The Netherlands Dermatologists confirm Wartner Cryotherapy’s safety: “The effectiveness of Wartner Cryotherapy is comparable to that of the classic technique (Liquid Nitrogen = doctor’s method) in every respect, and the freezing effect it has is similar to that obtained by Liquid Nitrogen, perhaps a little slower (20″ application instead of 3″ application), which I think is safer and less painfull” Dr J M Gray – Dermatologist – Paris, France “The expert opinion is that Wartner Cryotherapy freezing liquid can be applied by patients themselves, and therefore sold to the public freely” Dr I H Boersma – Dermatologist – Albert Schweizer Hospital – Zwijndrecht, The Netherlands
When should Wartner Cryotherapy not be used?
Wartner Cryotherapy may not be used for:
  • removing warts on the face or the genitals;
  • skin conditions with signs of inflammation;
  • dark moles, dark-colored, hairy or otherwise unusual looking skin conditions which resemble warts;
  • warts on children under the age of four.
What are the most important parameters for an effective treatment based on Cryotherapy?
  • Temperature of the application
  • Contact time on skin
Is the gas mixture (DMEP) used as effective as liquid nitrogen used by the doctor?

Wartner Cryotherapy is based on the liquid nitrogen method of cryotherapy, which is used by doctors. Clinical studies have proved that Wartner Cryotherapy is as effective as liquid nitrogen.

A clinical study to compare efficacy, tolerance and safety of 2 types of cryotherapy (liquid nitrogen (LN) and dimethylether/propane (DMEP) was performed by family physicians for warts on 124 patients (174 warts). Design of the study: randomized, multi-centered, controlled clinical trial with single blind assessment. Conclusions: The results show that both cryogenic agents were >90% effective. Liquid Nitrogen has a temperature of -196ºC, whilst DMEP is -57ºC and therefore much less likely to cause deep tissue damage.

Dermatologists confirm Wartner Cryotherapy’s effectiveness: “the efficacy of Wartner Cryotherapy freezing fluid is as effective as commonly used liquid nitrogen (= doctor’s method). In case of thick callosity we remove the callosity by scraping in a gentle way and apply Wartner Cryotherapy freezing liquid effectively” Dr I H Boersma – Dermatologist – Albert Schweizer Hospital – Zwijndrecht, The Netherlands.

“The effectiveness of Wartner Cryotherapy is comparable to that of the classic technique (Liquid Nitrogen = doctor’s method) in every respect, and the freezing effect it has is similar to that obtained by Liquid Nitrogen, perhaps a little slower (20″ application instead of 3″ application), which I think is safer and less painful” Dr J M Gray – Dermatologist – Paris, France

What temperature reaches Wartner Cryotherapy?

Wartner 2nd Generation reaches a temperature on skin of -50° which is the coldest therapeutic temperature reached on the market as a cryotherapy.

How does it compare to other cryo products in the market?

Based on clinical research, Wartner clearly outperforms competition in relation to therpautic temperature and saturation of the applicator.

Will I get a scar from using Wartner Cryotherapy?

If you follow all the directions in the instruction leaflet correctly, using Wartner Cryotherapy will not result in scarring. Skin discoloration may occasionally occur, but will disappear over time.

If I have more than one common wart or verruca, can I treat them all at once?

No, if you have several common warts or verrucas in the same area, treat only one at a time. Treat each remaining wart or verruca separately with a 2-week interval between treatments.

Is Wartner Cryotherapy difficult to apply?

No. Wartner Cryotherapy should be applied with precision, but it’s not difficult. The information leaflet explains exactly how you should apply Wartner Cryotherapy.

How long should I press on the valve?

You press the valve down firmly for three seconds.

Should I press the cold foam applicator onto the wart or verruca immediately?

No. After pressing the foam applicator into the valve for 3 seconds, 20 seconds need to be waited before application on skin. This waiting period allows the gas on the foam applicator to reduce even further in temperature, resulting in the most effective therapeutic temperature for a fast and convenient removal of the wart/verruca.

How long can I apply the cold foam applicator to a wart or verruca for?

Warts: (max.) 20 sec.
Verrucas: (max.) 40 sec.

How often may I use the foam applicator?

Each foam applicator may be used once only and should then be discarded to avoid spreading the virus.

How many warts or verrucas may I treat per hand or foot simultaneously?

Only one per hand or foot may be treated by Wartner Cryotherapy at a time.

How often may I use Wartner Cryotherapy?

Wartner Cryotherapy may be used up to 3 times per wart or verruca. You should leave a 2-week interval between treatments.

I’ve tried Wartner Cryotherapy once, but nothing happened, what do I do next?

For old or persistent warts or verrucas, two or three applications maybe required. To help with treatment, remove the top layer of skin with a pumice stone or emery board; this will expose the core. Treat each wart or verruca with a 2-week interval between treatments. Consult your doctor if there is no improvement after three treatments.

Will successfully treated common warts or verrucas return?

A successfully treated wart or verruca usually means that it has been removed permanently. The body’s immune system will normally purge any remaining traces.

When should I not use Wartner Cryotherapy?
  • If you are diabetic.
  • If you are pregnant.
  • If the common wart or verruca is located in a sensitive area with thin skin (e.g. the face, neck, armpits, chin, breast) or on genital warts.
  • If the nearby or affected skin is inflamed.
  • If you are not certain that the skin condition you are treating is a common wart or verruca.
  • Wartner Cryotherapy should not be used on children under the age of four.
Are there any side-effects from using Wartner Cryotherapy?

There are a number of possible side-effects:

  • As with all freezing methods, the skin may turn white temporarily.
  • A blister develops under the wart, but this is part of the treatment and is harmless.
  • Using Wartner Cryotherapy may cause some discomfort.
  • Applying the foam applicator to the wart or verruca for too long may lead to local tissue death. You should therefore follow the instructions carefully and apply the treatment for the time specified based on the size of the wart or verruca.
  • Always use Wartner Cryotherapy very carefully and accurately. If you’re not careful, scars and nerve damage may occur.
How serious are the various side-effects?
  • White coloration of the skin: as soon as you press the foam applicator onto the problem area, the skin turns white. This discoloration quickly decreases as soon as the foam applicator is removed.
  • The appearance of a blister: this blister will disappear as soon as the wart or verruca falls off the skin. New skin will already have formed under the blister.
  • Discomfort during use: a stinging sensation may occur when the foam applicator is pressed onto the skin. This stinging sensation quickly fades once the foam applicator is removed.
  • Local tissue death: this will only occur during deep freezing of the skin. Therefore, never hold the foam applicator on a wart for more than 20 seconds (40 seconds for verrucas)
  • Scars and nerve damage: this will only occur from careless use caused by not following the instructions on the information leaflet. Never hold the foam applicator on the wart for more than 20 seconds (40 seconds for verrucas) to ensure that there is no deep freezing and therefore no damage.
What should I do if the side-effects do not disappear?

Always consult a doctor if the stinging sensation does not disappear or if other complications occur through using Wartner Cryotherapy.

Who can use Wartner Cryotherapy?

Wartner Cryotherapy may be used by most adults. You can also use Wartner Cryotherapy to remove warts and verrucas on children over the age of four, but the treatment must be carried out by an adult.

Can Wartner Cryotherapy be used to treat children?

Yes, Wartner Cryotherapy is suitable for children over the age of four.

Is it dangerous to use Wartner Cryotherapy to treat children under four?

We do not recommend the use of Wartner Cryotherapy to treat children under the age of four.

Can Wartner Cryotherapy be used by pregnant women?

No. Do not use Wartner Cryotherapy if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

How quickly will the wart or verruca disappear?

It takes approximately 10-14 days for the wart or verruca to disappear.

What should I do if the wart doesn’t disappear after 14 days?

If the wart or verruca doesn’t disappear after 14 days, you can treat it again. You can treat each wart or verruca with Wartner Cryotherapy a maximum of three times, with a 2-week interval between each treatment.

What should I do if it doesn’t disappear after three treatments with Wartner Cryotherapy?

If the wart or verruca doesn’t disappear after three treatments, you should go to your doctor.

Why should I use Wartner Cryotherapy if I can also go to the doctor for the same wart treatment?

Wartner Cryotherapy has a number of important advantages. It saves time and is easy to use. You no longer have to wait at the doctor’s surgery. The liquid nitrogen that your doctor uses has a much lower temperature than Wartner Cryotherapy. Because of this Wartner Cryotherapy is less painful but just as effective.

What is the difference between the liquid nitrogen method at the doctor’s surgery and a treatment with Wartner Cryotherapy?

The liquid nitrogen that your doctor uses has a much lower temperature than Wartner Cryotherapy. Because of this Wartner Cryotherapy is less painful but just as effective.

What are the components of the Wartner Wart Pen treatment?
Wartner Wart Pen contains a gel formulation based on trichloroacetic acid (TCA) in a easy to use pen applicator with a twist-and-turn mechanism to disclose the correct amount of gel to be applied on the wart.
How does Wartner Wart Pen work?

The Wartner Wart & Verruca Pen is a medical device indicated for treatment of common warts and verrucas. The pen applicator contains a new highly concentrated wart & verruca removal gel based on the traditional acid method.

The TCA gel allows the elimination of warts or verrucas thanks to a topical chemical eradication action. The gel induces the peeling of the keratotic tissue of the wart (or verruca) and allows the destruction of the causative virus. After wart (or verruca) desquamation, the skin will regenerate.

Will using Wartner Wart Pen hurt?

TCA is a corrosive agent and causes skin peeling within 10-15 minutes. Large amount of TCA gel might cause a slight tingling sensation that should disappear quickly.

If applied on the thin, damaged or sensitive skin, TCA may cause burning and painful sensation- but the sensation is transient and should disappear within few minutes. If painful sensation occurs the excess of the gel should be immediately cleaned out with water.

Is Wartner Wart Pen safe to use?

Yes, Wartner Wart Pen is safe to use if you follow the instructions carefully; however we do not advise use on children under the age of four.
CE Marked and classified as a Medical Device, which conforms to European guidelines (Council Directive 93/42/EEC amended by 2007/47/EC) Wartner Wart Pen has been assessed by several scientific and medical experts as being a safe method for the removal of warts and verrucas.

  • TCA is scientifically proven to have a long lasting peeling effect on the wart, which allows a continuous action on the wart.  It destroys the HPV virus.
  • The pH rate of TCA= 1.9 whereas salicylic acid has a pH rate of 2.4, which means that TCA is a stronger acid than salicylic acid.
  • Wartner wart pen is in gel format while salicylic acid compositions are generally in liquid form. The gel allows having a more precise application on the affected spot without too much invasion of the healthy skin around it by using an innovative applicator.
Will I get a scar from using Wartner Wart Pen?

If you follow correctly all the directions in the instruction leaflet, using Wartner Wart Pen will not result in scarring. It is important to use the product exactly as instructed as overexposure to the formula could cause temporary burning, temporary pain, mild temporary ulceration and temporary discoloration of surrounding skin.

If I have more than one common wart or verruca, can I treat them all at once?

Yes, if you have several common warts or verrucas in the same area you can treat them at the same time. However, in case you have 3 or more warts in the same area, please consult a doctor before using Wartner Wart Pen Wart Pen.

Is Wartner Wart Pen difficult to apply?

No. Wartner Wart Pen should be applied with precision, but it’s not difficult. The information leaflet explains exactly how you should apply Wartner Wart Pen.

How many times should I turn the twist-and-turn wheel before the first drop of TCA is released?

When the Wartner Wart Pen is used for the first time, it is necessary to fully turn the dial on the top of the pen clockwise to load the gel into the brush tip until the first drop is visible.  Several full turns might be needed as the gel is stored at the top of the Pen (to avoid leakage prior to first treatment)

Do not turn the dial more than the amount of times necessary to release 1 drop of formulation, as this may result in over-dispensing of TCA and smearing on normal skin, which might cause severe irritation of the area.

How long should I leave the gel on the wart?

It depends on the size of the wart or verruca (see instruction leaflet). Usually, 10 to 15 minutes are enough for the TCA to be absorbed on the wart.

How often may I use Wartner Wart Pen?

Wartner Wart Pen should be applied twice daily for 4 days. After this treatment of 4 days, the skin will peel off over the next 4 days. You can carefully remove the peeling skin under lukewarm water. After the treatment, new skin (free from warts) will form. The wart may disappear from the first week of treatment. If the wart does not disappear completely, repeat the treatment after a break of 4 days. You can repeat this treatment schedule up to 4 times.

If the wart (or verruca) is small (size of a needle point), only apply the gel once a day

How do I use Wartner Wart Pen?

When the Pen is used for the first time, it is necessary to fully turn the dial on the top of the pen clockwise to load the gel into the brush tip until the first drop is visible. Several full turns might be needed as the gel is stored at the top of the Pen (to avoid leakage prior to first treatment).

STEP 1

Hold the pen vertically with the brush tip facing downwards. Slowly turn/click the dial on the top of the Pen clockwise to dispense the gel.

STEP 2

Allow the gel to flow into the brush tip for 3 to 5 seconds

STEP 3

Carefully apply the dispensed gel only on the wart or verruca (not on healthy skin surrounding it)

STEP 4

Let the gel dry for 10-15 minutes before putting on clothes or shoes.

The Wartner Pen formula is very concentrated and only one drop is needed per application. Carefully cover the entire surface of the wart and not the healthy skin surrounding it. Once the treatment is completed, carefully clean the pen with a tissue before storage.

2 ADDITIONAL STEPS FOR VERRUCAS for optimal preparation and after-treatment

PRIOR TO THE TREATMENT

First, soak the foot in warm water for 5 minutes and then rub the callous carefully with a file (widely available for purchase) to expose the verruca. Dry it thoroughly so there is no water/moisture between the wart and the Wartner TCA gel. Do not apply the TCA gel when the skin is bleeding or broken. File not included.

STEP 1-4

Same as for the removal of warts as above. Once treatment is complete, carefully clean the Wartner Pen with a tissue before storage.

I’ve tried Wartner Wart Pen once, but nothing happened, what do I do next?
For verrucas, which are more persistent and more difficult to treat, 2 extra steps are needed prior to the treatment. First, soak the foot in warm water for 5 minutes and then rub the callous carefully with a file (widely available for purchase) to expose the persistent verruca. Dry it thoroughly so there is no water/moisture between the wart and the Wartner TCA gel. Do not apply the TCA gel when the skin is bleeding or broken. File not included.

If there is no improvement after the first treatment period of 4 days, repeat the treatment after a break of 4 days, you can repeat this treatment schedule up to 4 times. If there is no improvement after the 4 treatment, please consult a doctor.

Will successfully treated common warts or verrucas return?

A successfully treated wart or verruca usually means that it has been removed permanently. The body’s immune system will normally purge any remaining traces.

Are there any side-effects from using Wartner Wart Pen?

There are a number of possible side-effects:

  • Using Wartner Wart Pen Wart Pen may cause some discomfort (transient tingling, burning sensation)In case of small warts, there is higher chance of wounding or discomfort experience, therefore the application should be limited to 1 time a day.
  • Always use Wartner Wart Pen Wart Pen very carefully and accurately. If you’re not careful, scars and minor skin damage may occur.
How serious are the various side-effects?
  • The appearance of a blister: this blister will disappear as soon as the wart or verruca falls off the skin. New skin will already have formed under the blister.
  • Discomfort during use: a stinging sensation may occur when the gel formulation is left on the skin. This stinging sensation will fade within 10-15 minutes after application.
  • Scars and nerve damage: this will only occur from careless use caused by not following the instructions on the information leaflet. Never use Wartner Wart Pen Wart Pen on healthy tissue, as TCA is a highly corrosive agent that will damage normal skin.
  • In case the wart is very small and the treatment is maintained too long or too frequent, TCA may cause peeling of the deeper layers of the skin. If that occurs, the treatment should be immediately stopped. Thanks to natural regenerative properties of the skin- this damage is not permanent- a new & healthy skin will form instead.
What should I do if the side-effects do not disappear?

Always consult a doctor if the stinging sensation does not disappear or if other complications occur through using Wartner Wart Pen Wart Pen.

Who can use Wartner Wart Pen?

Wartner Wart Pen may be used by most adults. You can also use Wartner Wart Pen to remove warts and verrucas on children over the age of four, but the treatment must be carried out by an adult. How quickly will the wart or verruca disappear?

The wart or verruca may disappear as from the first week. It takes in average between 1 to 4 weeks before the wart or the verruca disappears.

What should I do if the wart doesn’t disappear after 4 weeks?
If the wart or verruca doesn’t significantly decrease in size after 4 weeks, please consult your doctor if the wart does not disappear after 4 weeks of treatment.
What is the best way to take care of the area I’ve treated?

Make sure that the area stays clean. Do not pick at or scratch it. TCA treated skin may become hard (dead skin cells forming callus). Thick skin can be carefully removed using a file during bath or shower.

In order to protect healthy skin around the treated wart, white petrolatum cream can be applied, or a plaster can be used.

If treated wart is on the exposed/frequently used spot (like fingertip or joint), the treated area can be protected with a plaster.

Can I let the area I have treated get wet?
Yes. You can shower and swim after treatment with Wartner Wart Pen.
Who manufactures Wartner Wart Pen?

Wartner Wart Pen is manufactured by medical brands, Veembroederhof 96, 1019 HC Amsterdam, the Netherlands.

What is a corn or persistent calluses?

A callus (or callosity) is an especially toughened area of the skin which has become relatively thick and hard in response to repeated friction, pressure, or other irritation.

Differences with the Wartner Wart pen?
  • Lower concentration of TCA gel: The Corn Pen contains TCA gel which is less concentrated compared to the Wart Pen. The TCA gel induces a peeling of the skin. As this occurs, the thickened skin / corn will disappear and new healthy skin will form.
  • Bigger pen containing 4ml of gel
  • When used, apply only once a day
  • Tested in a self assessed study, 85% of people assessed of having a complete removal of their corn in just 1 week, clearly indicating that first visible results are reached within the first treatment period of 4 days. Effective from the first week.
What is a Medical Device? What’s the difference vs. a medicine?
A medical device is typically a product that works on or inside the human body, either temporary or permanent, and is aiming at prevention, diagnosis, monitoring or treatment of diseases. The key difference versus traditional medicines is that a medical device primarily works mechanically as opposed to pharmacologically, i.e. it works alongside or with your body versus affecting the chemistry of the human cells. Nowadays medical devices are used for alleviating and treating many severe and chronic diseases of heart, brain, bladder, digestive tract etc. with a superior efficacy to traditional therapy with chemical molecules. This because they typically work directly where your body needs help.
Is a Medical Device less efficient than a Medicine?
Medical devices for prevention and treatment of diseases are typically as or more effective than traditional medicines, because they work directly on the root cause and/or location of the problem – for example medical devices are nowadays used to provide superior relief to patient suffering from chronicle pain due to cancer.
What do common warts and verrucas look like?
Common warts are recognizable by the rough, “cauliflower-like” appearance of their surface. They are most commonly found on the hands, knees and elbows. Verrucas are the same as common warts but only appear on the sole of the foot, or the bottom of toes. Verrucas tend to be flatter and are often painful due to the pressure caused by walking.
Are there other types of warts?
Yes, apart from the common wart, a range of types of wart have been identified, varying in shape and site affected, as well as the type of human papillomavirus involved. These include: Common warts (Verruca vulgaris): These are discrete, flesh-coloured papule, with a rough surface. They may be single or multiple and occasionally can be quite large. They are most common on the hands, but may occur anywhere. They are usually relatively easy to treat. Plantar wart (Verruca, Verruca pedis): These are discrete and only just raised, having a roughened surface. They can occur on the palm but usually found on the sole, where they penetrate deeply because of the pressure of the body weight and are most difficult to treat. They may be quite painful and can interfere with walling. As they in volute, minute haemorrhages occur with them due to trombosed capillaries, which is visible by multiple black specks in the centre. They are usually found on pressure points on the soles of the feet. Plane warts (Verruca plana): These are small, smooth flattened warts, flesh-coloured, which can occur in large numbers. They can occur everywhere, bust most particularly on the face, neck, hands, wrists and knees. They are quite frequently misdiagnosed, particularly on the face. They often occur in lines corresponding to a scratch or other such trauma. Filiform or digitate wart, a thread- or finger-like wart, most common on the face, especially near the eyelids and lips. Genital wart (venereal wart, Condyloma acuminatum, Verruca acuminata): they occur on the genital area. Mosaic wart, a group of tightly clustered plantar-type warts, commonly on the hands or soles of the feet. Periungual wart, a cauliflower-like cluster of warts that occurs around the nails. NB. WARTNER 2ND GENERATION 2ND GENERATION/WART PEN ARE NOT TO BE USED TO TREAT other type of warts than common warts and verrucas.
What should I do if I’m not sure whether a lump is a wart or not?

    How to apply Wartner Cryotherapy?
    STEP 1
Hold the blue end of the foam applicator between the thumb and index finger and squeeze until a small opening appears. Slide the opening of the foam applicator onto the stick of the applicator holder until the stick is no longer visible.
    STEP 2
Hold the aerosol can in an upright position, away from your body and from incandescent flame, heat, direct sunlight and any electrical sources. Place the applicator holder with the foam applicator in the opening on the top of the aerosol can so that the foam applicator is no longer visible. Holding the aerosol can with one hand at the bottom, firmly press down the applicator holder with the other hand for 3 seconds (count from 21 to 23). You will hear a hissing sound whilst pressing. Remove the applicator holder with the foam applicator from the valve. The foam applicator is saturated with cold liquid and condensation will form.  This condensation is harmless.
    STEP 3
After saturation of the foam applicator, wait for 20 sec before topical application in order to further reduce application temperature and thus ensuring a better efficacy of Wartner.
    STEP 4
After the 20 seconds waiting time, push the applicator holder with the foam applicator lightly on the wart.
    • For Warts: use the applicator for 20 seconds
    • For Verrucas: use the applicator for 40 seconds
Ensure constant contact with the area to be treated. The foam applicator should be applied to the area for the required treatment time.  A slight aching, stinging sensation will occur as a result of freezing.  After treating the wart, wait 2 minutes before using a tissue to remove the foam applicator from the holder. Discard the foam applicator after single use. Do not reuse the foam applicator or touch the tip of the foam applicator with bare hands to ensure that you don’t re-infect the skin with the wart virus.

2 ADDITIONAL STEPS FOR VERRUCAS for optimal preparation and after treatment

PRIOR TO THE TREATMENT First, soak the foot in warm water for 5 minutes and afterwards rub the callous with the file to expose the verruca. STEP 1-4
See above. Same as for the removal of warts
    STEP 5
After applying for 40 seconds, you could experience some discomfort when pressure or friction occurs on the treated area. You may find it helpful to protect the sensitive area with a comfort plaster which is widely available for purchase. Comfort pads not included.
